Review
I just purchased this baitcasting reel for a recent 2 day deep sea trip where we were targeting yellowfin and bluefin tuna. I had heard good reviews so I thought I would give it a try. It was amazing and worked perfectly for the 25 - 30lbs tuna that we hooked up on. The free floating spool was amazing and allowed the bait to run without a lot of drag. This reel would probably work great for fish up to about 40 - 50lbs. Anything bigger you would probably want a little bigger reel. Here are the specs:
Penn Fathom Star Drag 25N Conventional Fishing Reel - FTH25N
The Penn Fathom Star Drag reel features the Penn Live Spindle
technology making it one of the most castable conventional reels on the
market today but the Penn Fathom Star Drag is tough enough to handle
long hard battles without skipping a beat. The Live Spindle with Free
Floating Spool on the Penn Fathom allows the spool to spin independently
of the spindle and pinion gear which significantly reduces the
friction. The Penn Fathom's Aluminum Body and Sideplates along with its
Stainless Steel Pinion Gear provide all the power and strength needed to
land large game fish while allowing you to cast bait to them.
Other impressive features are:- Anodized aluminum body and sideplates
- Stainless steel pinion gear with Bronze Main Gear
- Live spindle with free floating spool
- Patented Versa-Drag system with HT-100 washers
- 5 Shielded stainless steel ball bearings
- Instant anti-reverse bearing with silent back up ratchet
